Framing Centre

A suitably chosen frame and mount will enhance the appearance of any picture when properly framed.

We are members of the Fine Art Trade Guild and our framers have been trained to the highest standard by one of the leading framers in the Guild. These standards ensure the appropriate treatment and guarantee the high quality of work and attention we give to any item we frame.

With almost four hundred different frames to choose from and many more available, our bespoke framing is completed to the same high standards as our gallery framing, and if you have a favourite frame we will do our best to match it for you.

We frame virtually anything: photographs, certificates, water colours, needlework, oils, acrylics, sports shirts, items of clothing, tapestries and Chinese embroideries to name just a few examples. We also make box canvas frames for canvases.

We use high quality, acid-free materials in conservation level framing together with conservation glass. This helps to ensure that the item does not suffer discolouration and fading over time and protects it from atmospheric pollutants, such as dust and insects. We also offer plain, non-reflective and museum glass.

Yarm Gallery recognises the need to ensure that minimal impact to the environment should occur from our activities.

To this end, we only source mouldings (frames) from companies who assure us that all timber is sourced from forests that are operated on a sustainable basis - good forest management. Similarly, mount boards used are sourced from suppliers who use sustainable wood sources, and ensure that due to the use of water-soluble adhesives, waste produced during the manufacturing process is recycled back into the process.

Fine Art Trade Guild

The Fine Art Trade Guild represents the Art and Framing industry and sets and maintains industry standards for the benefit of Members and their customers. Below is some advice on choosing the right frame for your image.

Choosing the right frame: what your money buys

You may think you want the cheapest frame but low-cost framing can actually damage your picture. Some art should be protected for future generations.

As professional framers we can advise you on the appropriate level of framing for your artwork - and will know how to make even a modestly priced print look its best

The Five Levels of Framing

You have a choice about how much or how little you want to safeguard your picture. There are Five Levels of Framing for you to choose from as the following summary explains:

Yarm Gallery normally offers conservation framing to all our customers, however we can also offer Museum and Commended. Prices are adjusted accordingly. Please ask our staff to explain the difference.

  • Museum - The ultimate protection for your artwork
  • Conservation - Helping preserve your artwork for future generations
  • Commended - Guarantees a degree of protection, with design playing an important part

We do not offer the following framing options:

  • Budget - Visually pleasing, but offering no long-term protection
  • Minimum - Putting economy first

Types of Glass

2mm Plain Float Glass – this is the standard glass used for most framing work. It offers UV (ultra-violet) radiation protect of approx. 45%, i.e., 45% of the UV striking the glass is removed. In conjunction with normal house window glass, the total UV reduction is around 80%

Reflection Control Glass – this glass is acid etched on one side to reduce the reflections seen on normal float glass. Although it is effective in reducing reflections, it often reduces the impact of the art due to diffusion – colours are ‘muted’

Conservation Glass – this provides the ultimate in UV protection – approx. 99% of all UV is stopped.

Reflection Control Conservation Glass – as you will probably guess, a glass that offers both almost total UV protection along with reflection control.

Water White Glass – this offers just about the best clarity of all glass, however, this clarity has a drawback – it only offers around 30% UV reduction.

Museum Quality – this offers almost total UV protection and is crystal clear so that the glass is virtually invisible.

We have available all the above glass types, and will advise you on which is most suitable for your picture.

Our Gallery staff are trained in most aspects of framing so that when your order is taken, they will discuss the frame and mount/s and advise on what they feel is suitable for your art or object.

We will try to meet any requirements you may have and will offer expert advice on the best way to frame your art. We also reframe images to match a change of décor, damage to the frame or glass etc.
